SPEX is a new sensor package under development to
capture a variety of acoustic information from the
ocean-sea-floor interface. Arranged in a linear array,
this package will be capable of detecting many new
target types and will be ideal for a "trip-wire" system
to alert system operators to the passing of large
vessels in the water column above the array, as well as
to the impact of objects with the sea-floor.
This package is designed primarily
for use in near-shore areas with a relatively shallow
water column and is ideal for protecting harbors and
shore side installations in conjunction with an active
SONAR system such as SDSN or for installations where
detection and tracking of swimming intruders is not a
concern.
