Ocean
Acoustic Laboratory at the Pacific Missile Range Facility
The Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), a 1,000
square mile region off the west coast of Kuaui, HI, is used to train Naval
personnel in such arenas as anti-submarine warfare and mine hunting. The
range features over 175 bottom mounted hydrophones that are used to track
objects on the range and to communicate with ships and submarines. With
funding from the Center for Excellence in Research of Ocean Sciences (CEROS)
and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), SSI is developing an automated
system that will use theses hydrophones to image the sound speed structure
in the region using time-delay tomography. This system is the feature
component of the proposed Ocean Acoustic Laboratory at PMRF. The output from
the tomographic imagery is then used to constrain a high resolution
hydrodynamic ocean model of the region. The final output of the system is a
high fidelity and high resolution estimate of the ocean region's sound speed
structure that can be used as a sonar system training tool. The effects of
the environment on sonar system performance are often under-represented -
the OAL is an important step in improving understanding and possibly
exploitation of the environment.
