Michael Birmann received a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute in 1986. He joined SSI in 1996 and serves as the lead engineer and project manager for the High Frequency Marine Mammal Monitoring Sonar (HFM3) project. Mr. Birmann has also played a key role in the Swimmer Detection Sonar Network (SDSN) project since its inception. He came to SSI from Atlantic Applied Research Corporation (AARC) where his focus was on computational fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, marine propulsor design and acoustic signature reduction. At AARC, he assisted in the design and fabrication of an acoustic wind tunnel test facility.
Mr. Birmann grew up on the South Shore of Boston and is an avid and accomplished dinghy sailor. While at Webb Institute, he was the Captain of the Sailing Team and also played on the basketball team and served as Vice President and as a member of the Honor Council within the Webb Student Organization. He competed in the U.S. Olympic Sailing Trials in the Finn Dinghy in 1992.
